The most transformational periods in my life all happened when I was 'in between' things. In between jobs, cities, identities. And I just recently learned the word for it: Liminality. It comes from the Latin word for "threshold." It's the in-between state. The space where you've left the old but haven't yet arrived at the new. The funny thing about liminality is that it feels deeply uncomfortable in the moment, but looking back, it's where all the growth happens. When you're in the middle of a transition, you're forced to question everything and redefine your identity You're not who you were, but you're not yet who you're becoming. What's that quote again? "The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance." – Alan Watts If you're in a liminal space right now, feeling lost or uncertain, know that you're exactly where you need to be.
